History of Coffee

In the beginning…. the coffee plant was discovered in Ethiopia, by a shepherd who had noticed increased activity from his sheep after they consumed fruit from a plant. To cut a long story short (most of which is unreliable as this story begins circa 850AD) Coffee was first consumed as a beverage in Turkey around 1100AD.

Subsequently Coffee entered Europe through Venice, where it was blessed by the Pope. Soon enough Coffee had spread through Europe, and was then transported to the America’s, where at one stage, at the beginning of the 1900’s, Brazil accounted for almost one hundred percent of the worlds harvest.

To date, Coffee is the second highest traded ($) commodity in the world only to oil, and over 400 billion cups are consumed yearly.
